Values

The beliefs, standards, and ideals of an individual or society toward which the people have an effective regard.

“Authentic values are those by which a life can be lived, which can form a people that produces great deeds and thoughts.”

Allan Bloom (1930 – 1992). “Values,” The Closing of the American Mind:  How Higher Education Has Failed Democracy and Impoverished the Souls of Today’s Students, 1987

“The fundamental value in relations among people is to respect the dignity and individuality of fellow men, to treat them not as objects to be manipulated for our purposes or in accordance with our values but as persons, with their own rights and their own values – as persons to be persuaded, not coerced, not forced, not dulldozed, not brainwashed.”

Milton Friedman (1912 – 2006). “Is Capitalism Human?” (1978), Bright Promises, Dismal Performance: An Economist’s Protest, ed. William R. Allen, 1983

“Without commonly shared and widely entrenched moral values and obligations, neither the law, nor democratic government, nor even the market economy, will function properly.”

Vaclav Havel (1936 -). “Politics, Morality, and Civility,” Summer Meditations, 1991, tr. Paul Wilson, 1992

“If a nation values anything more than freedom, it will lose its freedom;  and the irony of it is that if it is comfort or money that it values more, it will lose that too.”

W. Somerset Maugham (1874 – 1965).  Strictly Personal, 31, 1941

“There’s a tendency to throw aside old values as belonging to an earlier generation.  Don’t discard those values that have proven, over the period of time, their value.  Just believe in those values that made our nation great and keep them: faith, family, hard work, and above all, freedom.”

Ronald Reagan (1911 – 2004). Speech before junior livestock competition participants at the Illinois State Fair, Springfield, 12 August 1986

“Slow me down, Lord, and inspire me to send my roots deep into the soil of life’s enduring values that I may grow toward the stars of my greater destiny.”
